Spiceworks Collections: Now With Backend Database!

Hi Spiceheads!

It was mid September 2018 when Spiceworks Collections was rolled out. Collections were created, items were added, feedback was received, and most importantly, it was listened to.

We realized that our first implementation had one major flaw, the ability to globally sync and backup your Collections. Thus, Collected items were erased and usage dropped. The reasons for this oversight were based on getting the tool to y'all quickly, in order to see if it would be used. It certainly was, and I am proud to say that to date we have 2,421 unique users who have created 3,182 Collections containing 6,354 topics/how-tos/URLs!

I did mention that usage dropped... You may be saying "those numbers look pretty good?!", and they are. But when you break it down, you start to see that the average number of Collections per user is 1.3, with a total of 2 items saved per Collection.

For a typical user of the Collections feature, you would have 1-2 Collections that contain 2 items each. This is the equivalent of someone just trying it out, and then realizing it was not for them for one reason or another. After listening to your feedback and sending out a couple surveys, the reason for these low numbers can be directly attributed to the fact that we didn't back up your valuable content. I get it: Who would want to invest time and effort into saving something that could be erased so easily?  It's as if I was giving away free storage units, but the caveat was that they were made of sugar -- and when it rained they would disappear. Sure -- they are free storage units, but would you store your stuff in them? Probably not.

Well, I am very pleased to say that we have finished building the backend for Collections. So now, your items will be saved, synced, backed up and available on any browser you log into the Spiceworks Community with!

Plus, our Pimiento users will now have access to Collections too!

Do y'all have to do anything? Not really. Ultimately nothing will look like it has changed, other than the beta badge will be removed and the first time you go into Collections you will see a one-time prompt stating that Collections is now out of beta and is stable.

So what's next: We'll be paying attention to how you all are using it. And if the numbers make sense we'll start adding new features, and I can tell you that sharing and public Collections are close to the top of that list.

I will be at SpiceWorld and would love to hear your thoughts and feature requests for Collections as well as anything else within the Community. So come say Hi!

I really want to thank all of the early adopters of Collections for providing us your feedback and praise. It is a tool created for all of you based on the original favorites list feature request. I am over the moon that after almost a year of usage, research, data analysis, user feedback and survey results, that Collections has graduated from experiment to feature within our Community!

Now I am going to whip up a bacon and peanut butter sandwich and collect a few new items.

I'll use it again. I liked the idea of it, so this should actually make it practical.

To be honest, this should have happened a long time ago, but as is all things in life, other priorities slowed the progress. You bet we are happy to have this done now! Finally Collections can be accessed from any browser! *happy dance*

Thanks for the update, I have been using the collections to keep track of each years NCAA March Madness brackets I run.  I helps me to be able to refer back to them and not have to find them.

Exactly! No matter what you use Collections for, the purpose was to create a tool that makes it easier to revisit your favorite stuff! :)

I get it now!  I've been ignoring the Collections tab all this time and could have been using to save cat memes!  Now my life is complete!

Yes! create the best Collection of cat memes ever! That way you have them on hand, easily found, just when you need them. Should we create the option to have Collections be made public, you may go down in history as having the most complete cat meme collection on the internets.

Hey Craig! Think of it as a customizable favorites list with folders. Check out the original post from September. :)
